A 1.21-mile path of asphalt and boardwalk is planned off Sunset Lake Road, with a $300,000 state grant for planning. The town's survey on trail features is open now.

Holly Springs has started planning a new greenway in the east of town, and it wants to hear what people would use it for. The Camp Branch Greenway would run about 1.21 miles off Sunset Lake Road. The town expects a paved path with sections of boardwalk.

The town announced the project in an Oct. 22 news item, after an open house that week. Residents can now share ideas for the trail’s features in an online survey. The town has not published a closing date.

Where it would go

The path would run along the eastern edge of town, according to the Camp Branch Greenway project page. The town says it could eventually connect three neighborhoods with a future greenway in neighboring Cary:

  • Wescott
  • Carrington
  • Sunset Oaks

The consultant’s project area map, dated Oct. 21, shows the study area running east of Sunset Lake Road beside a Duke Energy easement. It marks a “future Cary greenway connection” at the eastern end. It also marks three possible neighborhood connections, a creek crossing and steep slopes of up to 29% at the western end. The map was drawn by Dewberry for the town.

How it is paid for

The town lists two sources on the project page:

  • Bond money. Holly Springs voters approved a $100 million parks bond in November 2023. The town has not said how much of it goes to this greenway.
  • A $300,000 state grant from the Great Trails State Program to begin planning the segment. The town said the money will study whether the route works.

No total cost has been published.

When it could open

Not soon. The project page lists preplanning and design as in progress and public engagement as fall 2026. Neither construction nor completion has a date yet.

What it means for you

  • Have your say now. The survey asks what you want on the trail. The town has not said when it closes, so answer early.
  • Live nearby? If you are in Wescott, Carrington, Sunset Oaks or the streets off Sunset Lake Road, the map shows where neighborhood links could go. Check it before you answer.
  • Questions go to Holly Springs Parks and Recreation at 919-557-2939 or pr.registration@hollyspringsnc.us.
  • Want a greenway today? The Middle Creek Greenway already runs nearly 3 miles near Sunset Lake and Holly Springs roads. Our walking and biking trails guide and parks and trails page list every route in town.

We will add the survey’s closing date and any construction timeline when the town publishes them.
