NCDOT has started widening Sunset Lake Road to four lanes between Holly Springs Road and Lockley Road. A 59-hour weekend closure is planned, date not yet set.

The N.C. Department of Transportation has started widening Sunset Lake Road in Holly Springs. The road will become four lanes with a median between Holly Springs Road and Lockley Road. The town announced the start in a Nov. 3 news release.

Construction is expected to last until mid-2027, the town said. Drivers near the Sunset Lake Road and Holly Springs Road intersection should watch for flaggers directing traffic on both roads.

What NCDOT is building

NCDOT’s project page for the job, project HL-0008D, lists:

  • four travel lanes with a median, between Holly Springs Road and Lockley Road
  • a sidewalk on the west side of Sunset Lake Road
  • a multi-use path on the east side

A weekend closure is coming

NCDOT plans one long closure while crews install drainage under the road. It is expected to last 59 hours, from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.

  • Closed: Sunset Lake Road between Eisenhower Drive and Holly Springs Road
  • Detour: Holly Springs Road, North Main Street (N.C. 55) and Sunset Lake Road
  • Date: not yet announced. NCDOT says it will give advance notice of major lane closures and traffic changes.

NCDOT also says it is working with the Wake County Public School System on anything that could affect school buses, crossings or campus access.

Cost and schedule

The project is estimated to cost $4.58 million, according to NCDOT. That is $250,000 for design, $630,000 for land and $3.7 million for construction.

NCDOT says future dates are preliminary and may change. The town’s release says work should continue to mid-2027.

The money comes from a bonus allocation tied to the N.C. 540 toll road. The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization learned of the bonus early in 2020 and picked this road as one of several projects to receive it, NCDOT said. Design work began in early 2021.

The state’s DriveNC.gov traffic map lists intermittent lane closures in both directions on this stretch through Dec. 10, 2027.
