Most of the busy roads in Holly Springs, including Holly Springs Road, Avent Ferry Road, Main Street and N.C. 55, belong to the state, and NCDOT runs almost all of the traffic signals, the town says. The town pays for and manages several widening projects on those roads in partnership with NCDOT to speed them up.

Work going on now

Sunset Lake Road, Lockley Road to Holly Springs Road. NCDOT has started widening this stretch to four lanes with a median, a sidewalk on the west side and a multi-use path on the east side, the town said in a Nov. 3 release. Work is expected to run to mid-2027. Watch for flaggers at the Sunset Lake Road and Holly Springs Road intersection. NCDOT’s project page says one 59-hour weekend closure, 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday, will close Sunset Lake Road between Eisenhower Drive and Holly Springs Road, with a detour on Holly Springs Road and North Main Street. The date has not been announced. DriveNC.gov lists intermittent lane closures through Dec. 10, 2027. More in our story on the widening. Project hotline: 984-205-6615, code 9287.

Holly Springs Road gas line, near the Holly Ridge schools. Enbridge began upgrading a gas line along the north side of Holly Springs Road the week of Oct. 5, between Flint Point Lane and the new bridge over Middle Creek, across from the Holly Ridge schools. The road stays open in both directions, but the northernmost lane and parts of the sidewalk on that side are closed during the work, the town said in an Oct. 5 notice. The town has limited authority over utility work in the right of way; questions go to Enbridge at 919-268-2195. The notice gives no end date, and the town had not posted an update as of Nov. 3. More in our story on the gas line work.

N.C. 55, south toward the Harnett County line. NCDOT lists intermittent lane closures in both directions on N.C. 55 between Saunders Road and the Harnett-Wake county line, from June 1, 2026, through Dec. 31, 2027, according to DriveNC.gov. The listing does not give a detour. Questions: NCDOT, 877-368-4968.

Optimist Farm Road near Bell’s Lake Road. NCDOT lists construction affecting a lane in both directions on Optimist Farm Road near Bell’s Lake Road through Nov. 15, according to DriveNC.gov.

Leaf collection. Town crews collect leaves one zone a week from Oct. 26 through February 2027, according to the town’s leaf season page. Zone B is this week, Zone C the week of Nov. 9 and Zone D the week of Nov. 16. Piles go out before 7 a.m. Monday of your zone’s week, off the street and away from storm drains. Expect slow-moving trucks on residential streets; more on the trash and recycling page.

On Avent Ferry Road, the plans add signalized crosswalks near Holly Grove Elementary and Middle schools, a traffic signal at the school exit, and make the Autumn Park neighborhood exit right-out only, the town says.

Have your say: after an Oct. 15 open house, the town is asking for feedback on the early design for the Holly Springs Road west widening. The notice gives no closing date; call 919-577-3150 to find out how to comment.

State projects

Complete 540. The Triangle Expressway (N.C. 540, a toll road) runs along the northern edge of Holly Springs. NCDOT opened the 18-mile Phase 1 extension from N.C. 55 to Interstate 40 on Sept. 25, 2024. Phase 2 continues 10 miles east to Knightdale and is scheduled for completion in 2028, according to NCDOT’s Complete 540 page.

Smarter signals. NCDOT picked Holly Springs as a statewide pilot for connecting traffic signals to the town’s fiber network with monitoring cameras, backed by more than $2 million in federal money. The town expects NCDOT to begin diagnosing and fixing signal problems remotely in 2026, according to the project page.

A possible street bond

Traffic was residents’ top concern in the town’s 2025 citizen survey. At a Sept. 30 workshop, council members showed interest in a street and sidewalk bond vote in 2028, the town said Oct. 1. Any bond would need voter approval.
