Enbridge has closed a lane near the Holly Ridge schools for a gas line upgrade. Widening to Main Street starts in 2027, and the town wants input on the west section.
Enbridge has started upgrading a gas line along Holly Springs Road across from the Holly Ridge schools. The road stays open in both directions, but the northernmost lane is expected to close while the work goes on, the town said.
It is the first of several projects on one of the busiest roads in town. Widening between Main Street and Flint Point Lane is due to start in 2027. The town is also asking for comments on an early design for the section west of Main Street.
Updated Oct. 25: the town has posted an online comment site for the west section design; it has not given a closing date.
The gas line work, now
The work runs along the north side of the road, between Flint Point Lane and the new bridge over Middle Creek, according to the town’s notice. During construction:
- Holly Springs Road is expected to stay open in both directions
- the northernmost lane is expected to be closed for a time
- parts of the sidewalk across from the Holly Ridge schools will close
The notice gives no end date. The town said state law lets utilities work in the public right-of-way or a utility easement, and that it has limited power to regulate the work. It said the quickest way to resolve a problem is to call Enbridge directly at 919-268-2195.
Central widening: Main Street to Flint Point Lane, from 2027
This section is about three-quarters of a mile. It will become a four-lane road with a median, sidewalks and pedestrian safety improvements, according to the town’s Oct. 20 council agenda packet. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
The project budget is $26.9 million. Federal grants through the Locally Administered Projects Program cover $14.2 million. The rest comes from the town’s capital plan, funded by the 2018 transportation bond.
On Tuesday the Town Council is due to award a $370,834 contract to STV Engineers, with up to $34,166 in contingency. The firm would oversee the moving of private utilities before road construction begins. The packet says this should cut the risk of utility delays and let the town claim eligible costs back from NCDOT early.
West widening: N.C. 55 Bypass to Main Street, design stage
The town wants this stretch to become a consistent four-lane, median-divided road with sidewalks. It also plans a wider outside lane for bicycles, its project page says.
Federal grant money is paying for the design. Construction is expected to start in 2030. The town has worked with NCDOT, the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, Duke Energy and state and federal environmental regulators on the project.
The town posted a call for comments on the proposed early design Thursday, Oct. 15. Its project page now links to an online comment site for the design. The town has not published a closing date. Comments can also go to the town’s Utilities and Infrastructure department at 919-577-3150 or Utilities-Infrastructure@hollyspringsnc.gov.
East of Flint Point Lane: done
Widening between Flint Point Lane and Sunset Lake Road finished earlier this year, the town said Oct. 1. It was one of the projects paid for by the 2018 transportation bond. NCDOT widened the road from Sunset Lake Road to the N.C. 540 interchange at Kildaire Farm Road.
The town council has discussed a possible new street and sidewalk bond. Council members showed interest in a vote in 2028, the town said. Any bond would need voters’ approval.
What it means for you

- Before you dig anywhere in North Carolina, call 811 or use NC 811.
- Have a say on the west section by contacting the town’s Utilities and Infrastructure department.
- Plan for 2027. Construction between Main Street and Flint Point Lane will follow the utility moves.
For other closures around town, see our road construction and closures page. The council meets Tuesday; here is what else is on the agenda.
