Bass Lake Park and Sugg Farm
Bass Lake has a 1.9-mile Lake Trail loop that starts behind the visitor center; about 1.65 miles is an easy lakeshore walk and about a quarter mile climbs through the woods, according to the trails page. Look for osprey, eagles and turtles.
Fishing is free with a valid license; anglers 16 and older need a North Carolina inland fishing license. The lake is stocked with catfish every other month from mid-spring to mid-fall. Limits are five bass a day, 14 inches minimum, and six catfish a day, 12 inches minimum. The visitor center sells bait and lends tackle free. Boats rent seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day: canoes and jon boats $10 an hour, motorized Gheenoe boats $15 an hour. There is no swimming, according to the boating and fishing page.
Sugg Farm next door is 117 acres of pasture and woods overlooking the lake, under a conservation easement held by Triangle Land Conservancy. It has an archery field, a community garden, a radio-control flying field, a nature play area and sensory trail, and the town’s festival grounds. The free, 1-acre off-leash dog park has separate areas for dogs over and under 30 pounds; dogs need current vaccinations and a rabies tag, children under 12 are not allowed inside and each adult may bring two dogs.
Greenways
| Greenway | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Middle Creek Greenway | Nearly 3 miles | Arbor Creek to Sunset Ridge North; connects to Apex’s greenway |
| Carl Dean Greenway | 1.3 miles, paved | Womble Park to Bass Lake Park, six workout stations |
| Utley Creek Greenway | 0.9 miles, paved | Partly shaded tunnel; links the area west of N.C. 55 with downtown |
| Veterans Park Greenway | Half mile, paved | Connects Sunset Lake Road and Jones Park |
Closure note: streambank repairs on Middle Creek near Anchor Creek Way and Wellspring Drive mean periodic closures of the Middle Creek Greenway, and the Anchor Creek Way access is closed during the work. Find any trail on the town’s greenway and trail finder.
Downtown and Mims Park
Mims Park is 17 wooded acres a short walk from downtown, with natural springs and the grave of G.B. Alford, whom the town calls its founder. A paved path runs from the West Earp Street trailhead to the springs, and a 0.8-mile natural-surface loop starts on West Ballentine Street. Bikes are not allowed on those trails, and they are best avoided after heavy rain.
Coming next: Eagles Landing Park
The town bought 56 acres on Cass Holt Road, across from Holly Springs High School, in 2020. Eagles Landing Park is under construction with a recreation center, splash pad, lighted pickleball and basketball courts, turf fields and a skatepark. Completion is expected in late 2027, though fields could open sooner.
